Night Radio

Night Radio formed at the turn of the millennium. They are a five piece band: Darrell Archer on guitar and vocals, John Sandow on piano, Dave Rae on guitar, Michael Ward on drums and Robin Dixon on strings and saw. It may well be that the regular identity crisis that songwriter Archer experiences keeps the band motivated. That, and the quality of the music they have committed to tape (and to the ether).

They have completed two full length albums in the last three years, the first, Ghost Stories, being a long-playing slow-burning affair that spoke in a near surreal fashion about the trials of contemporary folk in the australian bush and outback. It was self released and offered listeners the chance to hear something a little outside of the regular format. some mentioned The Triffids, while others spoke of Australian painters and poets.

There is a cinematic quality to much of Night Radio's music. This remains on their new album, Telluric, although the songs here are smaller in scale and somewhat more intimate. The band plays beautifully together (a feature of their live act), and Archer's vocals, though vulnerable still, have an inviting warmth around them.

Night Radio would prefer for their listeners to define their sound. If they used terms like alt country, new folk, lofi or folk rock....you would establish a picture of sorts, but only in black and white. There is much music in this band, and of many shades.
